Good #Stunday afternoon dear Susan the Beanery Baroness transformed again into the learned Librarian of #BlueBrewBooks. My reading attention span has shrunk of late but I have just started this by a poet killed in WWI. Promisingly lyrical. Perhaps a cup of #BlueBrew as I read? A rose for you.

The South Country by Edward Thomas
Introduced by Robert Macfarlane. Painted cover is a detail of Still Point, Woodborough
Bridge by David Inshaw.
A path leads through bushes or a hedge that seem to shroud a bridge beneath a cloudy blue sky. Words on back of book.
"Unlearned, incurious, but finding deepest ease and joy out of doors, I have gone about the South Country these twenty years and more on foot... When, in the clear windy dawn, thin clouds like traveller's joy are upon the high air, it seems that up there also, in those placid places, they travel and know the joy of the road"

Edward Thomas's death in the First World War robbed the world of a great poet, a fine writer, and a pioneering environmentalist. Published in 1909, The South Country is the happiest of all his books. Lyrical, passionate, acutely sensitive to life in the countryside and the rhythms of the seasons, it brilliantly merges landscape, folk culture, and natural history into a record of what Edward Thomas saw and felt as he wandered the old ways of southern England.
This edition includes a preface by Edward Thomas's wife, Helen, and the engravings by Eric Fitch Daglish.
"The South Country is a sustained prose-poem... There's something hypermodern about the book's collage-like feel, its shifts and bucks. In topographical terms, the experience of reading The South Country resembles a Google-Earth fly-over of the chalk counties: zooming in here, settling there, lifting off, scrolling on"
ROBERT MACFARLANE
Published by Little Toller Books
£15 US$25A rose as promised.

Good morning, Susan! Happy Sunday to our #ECK worldwide. A wake up #BlueBrew request for myself, please. This cooler weather is great for sleeping. But must be off to work. For #BlueBrewBooks I get stuck on an author, so reading
"The Grimoire Grammar School Parent Teacher Association". See alt text

Two parents and their recently-bitten-werewolf daughter try to fit into a privileged New England society of magic aristocracy. But deadly terrors await them – ancient prophecies, remorseless magical trials, hidden conspiracies and the PTA bake sale.

When Vivian’s kindergartner, Aria, gets bitten by a werewolf, she is rapidly inducted into the hidden community of magical schools. Reeling from their sudden move, Vivian finds herself having to pick the right sacrificial dagger for Aria, keep stocked up on chew toys, and play PTA politics with sirens and chthonic nymphs and people who literally can set her hair on fire.

As Vivian careens from hellhounds in the school corridors to demons at the talent show, she races to keep up with all the arcane secrets of her new society—shops only accessible by magic portal, the brutal Trials to enter high school, and the eternal inferno that is the parents’ WhatsApp group.

And looming over everything is a prophecy of doom that sounds suspiciously like it’s about Aria. Vivian might be facing the end of days, just as soon as she can get her daughter dressed and out of the door…

Good morning everyone! I'm nearly finished with listening to the audiobook "Musashi." It's funny, intense, and thought-provoking all at the same time.

Just at the beginning of this, but I already like the main character and am cheering her on as she dissects the meaning of friendship.

Good morning Susan! I'm off for a hike this beautiful morning. So glad that #BlueBrewBooks has reopened after summer vacation. I just finished Kindred by Octavia Butler and wanted to sing it's praises.

Hello Susan, how are you? For #BlueBrewBooks Sunday I'm sending you a photo of my friend's book on her childhood. We grew up at the same time so our collective memory is very similar. Could you save me some #BlueBrew for tomorrow morning please? Have a lovely Sunday 😊

Now I’ve had my #BlueBrew coffee, here’s my current read for #BlueBrewBooks:

It’s a weird novel by a mysterious Japanese horror writer called Uketsu.

Does anyone know of him? I can’t work out yet if I like it or think it’s rubbish!

Hi all and welcome back if you took the summer off! This week, I read “The God of the Woods” by Liz Moore, and got about 1/2 way through “Katabasis” by R.F. Kuang. Moore’s novel was hard to put down, but I’m struggling with Katabasis. God of the Woods is a great mystery (cont. in ALT)

novel, though it moves much like a mini-series, with stops and starts. For that reason only, I’d probably give it 3.5 ⭐️ .
Katabasis is a fantasy novel about academic magicians working their was through Hell — literally. It can be a bit obtuse at times, but each new character they encounter is splendid, and the situations are well crafted. It’s more fun than it sounds! I’m guessing I’ll give it 4 ⭐️!

The Sirens is a quick, fantastical read, a mystery with some twists. It's a tale of four "sisters," separated by a couple of centuries, for whom the pull of the ocean is more than a yearning. It's a good palate cleanser, if your reading has been heavy lately!

Cover of the book The Sirens, by Emilia Hart. It's an underwater scene with coral, seaplants, shells and fish, with a girl in a diaphanous dress floating through.
