Hen of the woods found in Southern Vermont along the AT. I've never tried it! I'm too far from home to harvest. It looks to be in it's prime.

Someone made a cool Camino marker. Ranger Sarah just wishes it would have been on the outside of the fence.

September 20, 1983, 43 years ago today: I crossed the South Branch of the Carrabassett River at another wide, shallow ford amid a lush forest filled with dense undergrowth and began the ascent of the Crockers.

Beneath a hazy white sky we are climbing a mountainside that slopes up from left to right, crossing a lookout from which we can see across the tops of some very weather-battered trees and shrubs to the rugged wooded flanks of a very lofty mountain range. The upper slopes of this range are predominantly covered in a dusky forest of spruce and fir. Below that, the forest is mostly hardwoods. These trees are beginning to turn yellow and bright green at the lower elevations, increasing with altitude until those on the middle slopes just below the evergreen forest have virtually all turned.

September 20, 1983: I really wanted to hike the thirteen tough miles over four major summits today and make it to the Post Office in Stratton before it closed this evening.

September 19, 1983, 43 years ago today: The grades moderated along the crest. Most of the final mile to the summit was a series of gradually-ascending terraces. Dark, soggy tundra was interspersed with ledges of naked rock dabbed with lichen.

#backpacking #hiking #AppalachianTrail

The entire scene is submerged in a wind-blasted cloud. A weird dim luminescence without real highlight or shadow creates strange colors never seen before. The rushing vapors blur everything around us. We are walking up an alpine ridge crest covered with ground-hugging plants in shades of green and maroon. There are scattered light gray boulders and rock outcrops covered with light green lichen. The trail up is sandy in places. The gently uphill-sloping portion of the ridgeline we are on has scattered stunted spruce 2 or 3 feet in height. Ahead the slope gets a bit steeper and the stunted spruce covers most of that crest, which gradually disappears into that cloud as we look upward.

September 19, 1983, 43 years ago today: A thin, halfhearted drizzle began to fall. The first couple of miles of trail consisted of short, steep climbs connecting long, broad plateaus.

The entire scene is submerged in a wind-blasted cloud. A weird dim luminescence without real highlight or shadow creates strange, eerie colors. The rushing vapors blur everything around us. We are standing next to a copse of weather-battered scrub spruce shivering in the gale. We are looking at a ridge covered with scrubby spruce, gray lichen-covered boulders and rocks, grassy looking plants and a few shrubs.

My hostel days are behind me after a rough NYC trip, but they can still be a smart budget pick for others.

September 18, 1983, 43 years ago today: The Appalachian Trail continued northeastward, crossing a bunch of small knobs along a low ridge and skirting a few sphagnum bogs resembling lonely moors.

#backpacking #hiking #AppalachianTrail

Beneath a deep blue sky with a few puffy clouds we are standing along the boulder-strewn shoreline of a mountain pond. A fresh breeze is chopping the waters, which are an even deeper blue. The pond is encircled by a forest of spruce and fir. A stretch along the far shore is marshy, with tall water grasses and the husks of dead trees, stripped of bark and left to bleach in the sun and rain.

September 18, 1983, 43 years ago today: The thirteen miles of Appalachian Trail between Routes 17 and 4 wound through a landscape of bogs, lakes and low ridges.

#backpacking #hiking #AppalachianTrail

Beneath a hazy white sky we are crossing a wide stream on a shallow, rocky ford amid a forest of mostly immature hardwoods in a marshy area, with one tall white birch on the bank to our right and a tall maple with dazzling red orange leaves to our left. The other hardwoods have yet to turn. An older forest of mostly evergreens is just upstream of us.
