Yes it’s okay to re-query a manuscript that has undergone revisions and just note that to the agent. However, if the agent passed for a specific reason, such as not representing the age, genre, etc., it’s important to consider if that agent’s wish list has changed. #AskDv

Does first-person present tense create a market concern for adult epic fantasy, especially with large-scale worldbuilding, or is that mostly judged on execution?

What’s the apt word count for a commercial Upper Middle Grade high fantasy manuscript? #AskDV

If there’s no box for a one-sentence pitch in a QueryTracker form, is it a good idea to add it on top of the query letter? #AskDv

@rebeccaw04.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 5:21 PM

I don’t outright reject any query, but if it doesn’t follow agency guidelines, it does make me more hesitant to take on the project. I know agency guidelines vary, but it’s especially important when submitting a sample—whether that’s a certain number of chapters, pages, or manuscripts. #AskDv

#AskDV Is it true that it’s especially hard right now to get YA published? If so, does that mean agents are being pickier about the YA projects they choose to rep?

@noreenmughees.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 5:20 PM

#askDV what makes you love a pitch? Do we pitch with agents guide?

@thehksmith.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 5:20 PM

#askDV any insight you can share into the state of YA fantasy right now? Has what you're looking for changed in the last couple of years, especially with the uptick in upper YA and even some blurring with New Adult?

@lunacwriting.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 5:19 PM

Hii! At what point does word count become a dealbreaker for a debut romantic fantasy/romantasy? Is around 100k still acceptable, or should we be aiming lower?
Thank you so much!

IMHO historical fiction needs to consider modern readership. It makes sense that a character would have outdated beliefs. But if those beliefs are harmful and not eventually unpacked on the page, know that they won't be excused just because they're period accurate, and plan accordingly #AskDV

What makes you automatically reject a query? #askdv

@cripademia.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 5:18 PM

If a manuscript has been revised substantially since the start of querying due to an R&R, is it useful to mention that in future queries?

Is it worth contacting agents previously queried?

I see teachers/librarians/parents asking for YA options with simpler prose, but SO many MSWLs want lush + lyrical. Which I love! but sometimes it can feel like simple = querying death sentence. What can help prose stand out of a pile when trying to write accessibly?

For YA Fantasy, what are you looking for in the opening pages?

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

@lunacwriting.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 5:17 PM

How important is the first page of the manuscript vs the query letter? Do agents read the query first or the pages first?
Thank you so much! 💗

@rebeccaw04.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 5:17 PM

Yes, I have passed on a manuscript where the pitch, story, or character was too similar to something one of my clients was working on. “Sitting on the same shelf” can also be a bit broader and just reference age and genre. #AskDv

If a novel was fully written by the author in another language, but AI was used only as a translation/revision aid into English, do agents treat that differently from AI-generated writing? Is disclosure expected, and can it still be an automatic rejection?

@tinaehsanipour.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 5:17 PM

#AskDV If an agent likes your pitch but you had already cold queried them in the past (and they passed on the MS), is it ok to send them material and explain that the MS has changed since your last query?
