Luca is a senior cat that has been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. He has clinical signs consistent with uncontrolled diabetes (muscle wasting, abnormal stance/gait), but he is eating well and very bright. Lucee is an 11 year old spayed female white and black "Cow" kitty with yellow eyes, a pink nose and white whiskers. She is standing half way out of the round opening of her kennel with just her front two legs and upper body showing. She is facing and looking at the camera. She is located at Manhattan NYC ACC. *Lucee is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. She is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid bite/scratch incidents. *Best In An Adult Only, Experienced Cat Parent Home

Dapper is a 10 year old female black and white tuxedo kitty with green eyes, a white chin and white whiskers. She is leaning down into someone's hand. She is located at Queens NYC ACC. *Dapper is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. Dapper has a small, non-ulcerated L4 mammary mass involving the nipple and irregular, poorly defined abnormal mammary tissue extending toward L5, highly concerning for mammary neoplasia. She also has generalized muscle atrophy with prominent spinal vertebrae and decreased abdominal muscle mass/tone. Blood-work is clinically unremarkable/WNL. Dapper is currently ambulatory, eating readily, and clinically stable; however, given concern for mammary neoplasia and guarded prognosis. We recommend chest radiographs for staging and radical mastectomy with biopsy/histopathology. *If Placement Not Found Quickly, Recommend Euthanasia

The show supports the myth that #adoption is some beautiful thing that happens in a person's life and is great. Nothing traumatic to see here! It's dehumanizing to see this storyline portrayed in this tired old way in the 2026. My god! Do some research!

It's clear the writers of the show don't view the birth mother as human at all. She is a doe-eyed, young woman whose story doesn't matter. The reasons leading up to this moment in her life don't matter, even when those storylines are important to every other character on the show. That's #adoption!

I've have many thoughts about that #adoption story line in Shrinking. At the moment I'll say for a show built around trauma, I'm disappointed but not surprised at how adoption is portrayed. We're given more insight into a patient who appeared in two episodes than we are about the birth mother.
