Lin’s hands fisted tight at her side. “No more, Magda. I’m going in, with or without you.”
Magda swallowed. Her eyes blinked anxiously. The bird cocked its head. Even that creature would not climb the walls of the citadel.

The line only works if you accept a definition it never states. Duty, in ordinary use, just means something you are responsible for, and people want to do what they're responsible for all the time. The nurse who loves nursing, the parent who wanted the child. Nothing suffers in either case. But the speaker here means duty in the older, narrower sense: an obligation handed to you from outside, which you'd be shirking the moment you consulted your own wishes. Kant pushed that version to its limit, arguing an act counts as moral only when you do it against your inclination, so wanting to do the right thing actually costs you the credit. Both meanings are in circulation, and this sentence quietly trades the first for the second without telling you.

Inside the book it isn't a general claim at all, and that's the part a meme can't carry. It's advice given to a character whose situation genuinely admits no third option. The crown prince of Orïsha has a duty to his father, a king who is exterminating the maji, and a heart that keeps pulling toward the people being exterminated. There is no arrangement in which both are served. For him the sentence isn't philosophy, it's an accurate description of a trap, and the novel spends its length watching him fail to escape it.

Adeyemi's publisher treats it exactly that way. The official reading-group guide prints this passage and asks readers to test it: how does the statement reflect each main character's journey, and what role do duty and heart play in their decisions? That is a question about a claim made inside a story, not an endorsement of it. The book gives the line to a character, and then gives four characters whose choices either confirm or complicate it. Whether it holds is the assign

Sunday by julia wilkinson.

Faint foggy drizzle ... atmosphere humid ... distant hills disappear ... woods sodden ... whistles and feathered chatter ... fawn tomato
vines fade feebly ... indoors beckons

... Spiced strawberry tea steams ... lunch crockery all cleared ... lone luscious rose hints of summer ... scented lavender bags bring homely charm ... somnolent clock ticks... siesta descends.

Jesus is here ... walls lighten as sun intensifies ... green glass glints ... hills reassemble ... vista reveals hues of rust and custard ... sea dissolves
in silver pearl ... time for trek down track.

The above quote completes this thought:
"After all, there is no position so absurd that you cannot get a great many people to assume it. Lord Maugham, a former Lord Chancellor (where do they find them?), was convinced that the decline of the Roman Empire was the result of too frequent bathing. Justinian knew there was a causal link between buggery and earthquakes..."

So the famous sentence is the conclusion of a comic list, not a standalone pronouncement. The examples are the argument.

Vidal's essay is an argument against sex laws, written during the 1964 Goldwater campaign, and Vidal's examples are a Florida anti-homosexual pamphlet and a Dallas stripper given fifteen years for marijuana because the jury disapproved of her morals.

The sentence is the punchline to a list. Vidal has just offered a Lord Chancellor who believed Rome fell from too much bathing, and the Emperor Justinian, who knew that sodomy caused earthquakes. Only then does he deliver the general claim. Without the examples, it sounds like misanthropy. With them it is an inductive argument, and a funny one, which is how Vidal preferred to win points.

Note that he does not call public opinion wrong. He calls it a chaos, meaning unsorted rather than mistaken. Superstition, misinformation, and prejudice are three different failures, and he lists them separately on purpose. His actual target is the next move: treating that mixture as a reliable guide to what the law should
