As proof, the royal advisor will be here shortly. In the meantime, you will be taken to the camp and supervised until a determination has been made. I trust this will be satisfactory?” “I assume it will have to be.” Fox handed over her knife, which was currently her only weapon. Av’ry followed suit. “Thank you for your cooperation.” The captain nodded. They mounted and followed their escort back towards the camp. Av’ry leaned closer to her. “They only sent 7 people, and they took your knife?” He wisely avoided explaining why he was incredulous about that. “Come on, Ave. Miki is smart enough not to volunteer any… unnecessary information.” “Oh.” He considered that for a moment and cast a furtive glance at the soldiers around them. “No need for us to volunteer it either.” Truthfully, she preferred people not know what she was, for more reasons than one. “Right?”

This was so like him. Hadrian had given her what she asked for in the most demeaning, underhanded way possible, while pretending he was doing it because it suited him. “I understand why this may not be exactly the scenario you were hoping for,” he said. “But you must understand. Dainn is not a person, certainly not a free person. He was created by the state, therefore he is owned by the state. Or more specifically, by me.”

#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity "dazzle" (but no razzle)

Jarek has heard all sorts of dreadful stories from the wars between the Elves and the People on her home continent, but she's never actually seen an Elf before. Nobody had thought to mention they were beautiful.

“Hello,” she said aloud, in a voice she might use to lure an animal to her hand. Beside her, the young man Gulnis startled, realizing in that moment that they had strange company. The being tilted its head, considering the word. Then it said something that, by its face, was meant to be stern, but the voice was too rich and melodious to carry the intent. Now Jarek definitely wanted one of these to sing for her as though she was a child or a royal. Elf, she thought. She had heard of elves, the beautiful folk, dangerous supposedly. It was hard to look at this beautiful slender creature and be frightened by the tales of their prowess with sword and bow. Was it even armed? It was, she realized. There was a sheath that looked like tree bark and a sword-hilt resembling a stick, and she had overlooked both until she thought to seek them. Gulnis, no doubt, had seen the threat immediately while she stood dazzled by beautiful hair framing a beautiful face. And now she felt lumpy and clodlike, a creature of ash and tinder, gray and ugly. Maybe she didn’t want an elf at her side after all. “Who are you? What do you want?” asked Genneg. The elf repeated what it – he, most likely – had said before, with a pushing gesture. It seemed clear enough to Jarek that what was wanted was for her people to go away.

It was now worth five times the price of anything they ever made.” I smiled at the thought of my mortal crush. “The boy said that, since it was his first piece, he would offer it to the Angels as thanks to the Maker for his creativity. When he came to my father’s temple, he promised the Maker that he would offer it to the first female he saw.” I remembered that day like it was yesterday. The temple was decorated in red and gold banners, ornaments, and dazzling jewels. It was the day of offering, which was a month before my birthday. “It was my very first time at the day of offering. Seina rolled with Aki engaging the actual job gratefully. She smiled at him. "Okay, cool. Dishwasher or drying rack...?" because she saw both. "Rack for the plates! Everything else in the washer." "Yessir," Seina lightly returned, and got the water running with a soapy sponge without hesitation. Benika and Okihiro froze for a moment, blinking at the couple diving right into the job. Benika had been impressed with Seina, then assumed it was simply maneuvering to get time with her boyfriend, and now she was being forced back to being impressed. Okihiro engaged first. "Uh, here! I'll dry the plates with a towel, so we can put them away." He placed himself opposite the dishwasher from Seina, and she immediately handed him a wet plate with a casual smile. That was the first time Okihiro got jealous of his brother. Seina's smile was bright, her dark eyes sparkled, and she made the boyish outfit look really good for some reason. And her partially revealed arms were so muscular. Aki caught enough to squint, but Oki recovered with a too-big smile, and got to work himself.

Background: A teenage, East Asian, female angel wearing a school uniform, with pink wings. We materialized in the dark and had to put the glasses back on. We were inside the circus tent. It was now clear it wasn't really a tent so much as a vary large sheet covering a domed structure. The lower part was a circular, very old-looking stone wall with a few windows in it. The upper part, extending out farther than the wall, was something made of metal and also round. I got an extremely bad feeling about this. "I think that answers ..." Frizzy Hair started to say. She was interrupted by the tent, sheet, whatever, being ripped open and light streaming in, blinding us. I felt Frizzy Hair dematerialize. A man started shouting in a language I couldn't identify, let alone understand. I removed my glasses and saw a couple of men in what were obviously military uniforms with guns pointed at me. I put my hands up and said, "Taiwanese citizen! I'm a tourist and can't read your signs," in English. Then I repeated it in Mandarin. I noticed the Chinese symbol for ignorance burned into the wall of a building nearby.

For all that Ragheiyont had given Akieryon a hard time about it, the Drilling Green was impossible to miss. Three stories up, the entire center of the building stood open to the dazzling blue sky, and a colonnade of sorts ringed a rectangle of perfectly maintained lawn. It was ridiculous.
