Fred expressed concern about Marissa’s erratic behaviour, trying every conceivable tactic to get her to calm down. He first rolled around on the freshly ironed black slacks so that the appropriate amount of non-removable hair had been applied before crawling into the bathroom sink, forcing her to brush her teeth in the kitchen, and making sure to be underfoot no matter where she tried to stand. Fred thought it was for her own good; evidently, she did not really understand cats. Those slacks didn’t work with that top anyway.

Varro turned to look at her. His perfect, white teeth glistened in the frame of his fading Miami tan. “Vacation. The hard part is done.” He glanced out the window, watching the city of New York roll by. His smile faded as the people and buildings flashed past. “Time. You hate that word, I know, but it could be growing short. I think Samael is back.” Rebecca simply nodded. She had felt something just a few days ago – a woman in a mall reading the back cover of EMBER. “Yes. That woman. I saw her too,” Varro confirmed. “I had a sense that she – apparently Samael’s new skin – wasn’t quite sure of who, or what she really is, but the memories are returning. The book, I’m sure, has expedited that process.” He paused for a moment, squeezing Rebecca’s hand. “But we still have…” “Don’t say it. I hate that word.” Rebecca cut him off. “I wonder if we should alert the kids? Riley and Ginny should know. Don’t you think.” “Yes. We should. Perhaps you should let them know. I’m still a bit of a shock for Ginny – alien if you will.
