Can a competently directed #horror feature with some dark humor still be an absolute failure? #ZachCregger makes CatBusRuss answer the question with his ignorance of #ResidentEvil.

For a fun #zombie movie without as much style, may Russ suggest “Cooties”?

Resident Evil opened to a franchise-record ~$60M last weekend. How much does it hold this weekend (Sep 25–27)?

Under $15M | $15–24.9M | $25–34.9M | Above $35M

Nail it, win a $200 Xbox or Amazon gift card.

My short, spoiler-free thoughts:

"'Resident Evil' 2026 is a fun romp through the RE universe hampered by a too-sudden ending and maybe a dash too much originality."

My in-depth, 📣spoiler-ful📣 thoughts are attached.

I went into "Resident Evil" 2026 game for whatever Zach wanted to throw my way. After almost a decade of Capcom seemingly attempting to erase the original games' canon while riding their legacy's coattails to financial success, all I wanted from this movie was a good time with RE but away from that nonsense.

The movie mostly met my expectations. Competent writing, a nice dash of humor, and lovely cinematography kept me glued to the screen. I laughed, screamed, and cheered for Bryan as he stumbled out of one mess into another.

Bryan and his actor Austin were what made this movie work. Bryan was a doofus even toward the end of the movie (seriously, dude -- why tf did you think approaching a monster bulb was a good idea? You could have gotten through the maternity ward without an army of monsters coming after you, but you just HAD to approach that bulb), but a doofus intent on making it home to his partner Michelle, and a doofus who reacted as most of us would. He frustrated me from time to time, but overall I loved him and wanted so badly to see him get cured and make it out alive. My heart sank and hurt for him when it became clear that would not be the case.

My first criticism is the exclusion of most RE elements. I was expecting a ton of exclusions given that this is an original story that plays out against the backdrop of the Raccoon City Incident, but the T-Virus isn't even mentioned! The only solid elements from RE that are present here are Raccoon City, its placement in the Colorado mountains, and Umbrella. It may be just as well that the virus wasn't called "T-Virus" given that it made its victims turn into tentacle monsters and fuse together, more like the Uroboros parasite in RE5.On that note, my second criticism: I found a lot of the new monsters kind of lame. I didn't mind the dog because it acted like the Las Plagas/Uroboros dogs in RE4 and RE5. I liked the monster babies and general grossness of the maternity ward. The puker was a cool redesign of the puking zombies. But, like, I didn't dig the cartwheeling zombie-fusion or the big guy with all the rats in him. Maybe it was a pacing thing. I did notice that when Bryan met up with Maxine and Paul and they took him into the city, the pace kind of slowed. The movie worked better when it was just Bryan by himself.

My final criticism was the ending. It was abrupt and robbed us of a sweet monster-versus-helicoptor scene. I guess Zach felt that since Bryan wasn't cured and he turned into a zombie-fusion, there wasn't anything left to show; Bryan's story ended, so there was no need to make the movie drag on. I think another scene, maybe focusing on Michelle, would have made the movie feel more complete. As it stands, it feels like Zach ran out of steam/ideas and decided to just cut the movie short.

In sum: "Resident Evil" (2026) wasn't my favorite movie of the year, and I think its Rotten Tomatoes rating is too high considering its issues, but I had a lot of fun with it. It's definitely the best new RE content I've consumed in a while. And if Zach wants to do a sequel (he initially said he didn't want to due to fan backlash, but he now says he has ideas for a second movie), I'm game for it.
