#yegbike commute larger area continues:
Lacombe was the end of the signed portions of the Trans-Canada Trail, the C+E Trail was a bit easier as some of the roads are named that.
North of Lacombe was a mix of minor secondary Higjways and section roads, a bit […]

Beside the motivational poster from the previous picture, a paved bicycle path descends down a hill alongside a barbed wire fence. This is alongside a gravel section road that travels far into the distance of gentle rolling hills with a mix of agricultural fields and woodland.
The sky is a lovely warm pale blue, with no clouds.A motivational poster is attached to a wooden telephone pole on top of a hill beside an agricultural field fenced with barbed wire. The sign reads; ‘Breathe Inhale Be Thankful’An open grassed field contains a grand wooden sign declaring a municipal park and playground.
Underneath the sign is a mini library stand. The stand is fashioned in the form of Snoopy’s Doghouse, with a representation of Snoopy sleeping on top in the image made familiar by the comic ‘Peanuts’A very bumpy and cracked old roadbed plows through agricultural fields. The old roadbed runs alongside a more modern Highway with trucks of all types driving by.
My wife is ahead riding her proper gravel bicycle, which is suitable for this challenging surface.

Today’s #yegbike expanded editon commute was mostly roadie heaven, some relaxed leisure pace, and some mixed surfaces, and of course some gravel section roads varying from perfect to fresh gravel floating.
From Sylvan Lake, on road until HWY 20 headed north […]

The author and his wife are on bicycles on the side of a big highway overpass.
An even bigger Highway, the QEII is underneath.A large section of pavement is suspended over the QEII highway. Many industrial buildings run alongside the roads.A paved section road stretches out into the distance. The road continues off into a horizon of low hills of agricultural fields.

This 5 block section of “urban singletrack” on 137 ave is my favourite. Why wouldn’t there even be a sidewalk here? #yegbike

#yegbike commute, larger #yeg area #bikepacking edition: Today was roadie day - mostly the shoulder of secondary highways.
South from Bentley, crossing HWY 12 on RG RD 12 two section roads to turn west at TWP 400. This was all good gravel, until crossing HWY 20 […]

The author and his wife pose for a selfie on the roadside, with bike helmets on. The road carries far off downhill into the distance. The countryside is treed agricultural land, power lines break the skyline in the distance. Two bicycles, fully laden with cargo bags, are parked at the roadside of a rural secondary highway. The wife is attending to her bike. Off in the distance a wide vista of agricultural farmland is shown. Somewhere in the hazy horizon is the faint impression of some Rocky Mountains.

If we had a real Vision Zero policy or team, there would have been a quick-fix response to this.

The intersection likely won’t see any fix for years because the team is wasting time doing endless consultations just to install a few speed bumps.

This is an issue in Alberta too. Wheelchairs and power wheelchairs are classified as walking and aren’t permitted in cycle tracks/bike lanes on the street.

Alberta should change this law as well. It’s not enforced anyway! Bring wheelchair users into the fold of active mobility. 👍

Perfectly lovely ride to the UofA tonight for a lecture. And I didn’t have to spend 10 minutes trying to get out of the Timms Centre parking lot! They could encourage more people to not drive by not providing a whole paragraph on free parking options w/o reference to other transportation! #yegbike

This year I've been riding my non-ebike much more. I've had two pairs of pants give out in the thighs/seat.

Coincidence?

It’s killing me that I can’t get out and ride my mountain bike.

The local trails are perfect at exactly the same time my Dr says no riding for 3 months. Grrrrrr.

#yegbike commute, larger area report: outside of Winfield we were at Hidden Springs Retreat, and that’s what we did for 3 days.
But today we cycled south to Bentley, using mostly gravel section roads, with mixed results. South of HWY 13, we took RGE RD 25, which was […]

Two goofy bikepackers are stopped in their cycling on a gravel road, which stretches out into the distance. Not pictured was a sign that said ‘Winding Road’, so I am singing a Sheryl Crow song that incorporates that phrase in the title.A muddy gravel/dirt road is shadowed by a canopy of deciduous trees.Alongside a gravel road, a very rustic homemade wooden statue of a dog is mounted on a post by a cornfield.

This event is an expression of pride in the active transportation network that CSU52 members helped plan, design, and build, and that many members use to get around town.
