The field of Alzheimer’s disease has seen transformative advances that are beginning to reshape clinical practice.

On #WorldAlzheimersDay, read a Seminar summarising the progress made and highlight the unmet needs and priorities for future research: spkl.io/633297Tz97

(A) MRI features of small vessel disease in an 86-year-old man with poorly controlled chronic hypertension. FLAIR shows severe periventricular white matter hyperintensities and lacunar strokes in basal ganglia (arrows). SWI shows multiple microbleeds in basal ganglia typical of hypertensive microangiopathy (arrows). (B) MRI features of cerebral amyloid angiopathy in a 71-year-old man with mild cognitive impairment and a positive [18F]-florbetaben amyloid PET. SWI revealed up to 12 microbleeds and three areas of focal cortical superficial siderosis (arrows), one in the right frontal lobe. FLAIR showed the typical multispot pattern of white matter hyperintensities in centri semiovale. T2 showed enlarged perivascular spaces in centri semiovale. FLAIR=fluid-attenuated inversion recovery. SWI=susceptibility weighted imaging.

For #worldalzheimersday titles from our shop that are some of the most emotive we have on the shelves.

Take Care, Son is Tony Husband's story of his Dad and his Dementia.

Aliceheimer's - Through the Looking Glass is Dana Walrath's exploration of her mother's descent into Alzheimer's disease.

🧠 On #WorldAlzheimersDay, awareness is only the beginning.

The more we understand, the more responsibility we have to act.

💬 If you could change ONE thing in dementia research, technology, care or support, what would it be?

“You know I’ve got PCA? I met people with it from all over the world. It was great fun… You understand each other’s experiences.” — The Telegraph, #TerryPratchett

Picture of Terry Pratchett with a quote from The Telegraph. A 2013 interview for Raising Steam, Terry spoke, with typical honesty and warmth, about living with the disease:
“You know I’ve got PCA*? The other day I met up with a lot of other people with it. They were from all over the world. And it was great fun... I’m not normally the sort of person who goes to that sort of thing. But I found you could say, ‘Don’t you like it when…’ and they’d say, ‘Oh yes’. You understand each other’s experiences.” — Terry Pratchett

75% of dementia cases worldwide go undiagnosed. This #WorldAlzheimersDay, we're exploring how EEG research could help close that gap — from brainwave patterns linked to Alzheimer's biomarkers, to why an earlier diagnosis matters more than ever. 🧠

Mathematicians are investigating how the intricate folds in the brain help to improve our brainpower. Monitoring brainwave activity linked to changes in brain shape could also be used for the early detection of neurological conditions which are known to affect brain folding.
