This month's Presidents Challenge was "something for the shop." Blair Moore brought two distinct items: a maple flower-pot maker (not a shop tool but used to make paper seedling pots) and pine-turned file handles shaped for comfort. Both are finished with wax.

Spalted vase (type of wood unknown). 13" tall x 4.5" wide, finished with linseed oil.

This thing has been in the shop for at least a year and I finally got around to finishing it. Definitely a challenge and mistakes were made but overall, i'm happy it's done.

Here's a small messmate bowl I made there

Not a great sign. Two of these thick blanks are already showing cracks. In both cases it's in the heartwood near the pith so maybe I should have cut away more of that material? We'll see if they propagate. Or maybe I could save them by trimming back the rims now?

Pentagon shaped bowl made from dibetou. The shape (especially of the rim) is inspired by a similar bowl which I saw during a recent wood turning event.

A little set of spalted american elm boxes (and one bowl because I screwed up the lid for that one). Finished with tung oil and beeswax.

I was going to try to make a little puzzle box today but that went very poorly so I did this instead.

Finishing up this Riverfront Stadium pen! It’s always really cool working on one of these that has actual pieces of the stadium mixed into the epoxy. This one is kind of a double since Riverfront Stadium was home to both the Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds.

My first attempt at making and using a supported spindle. It's too light and the cup is too shallow. But I like this style of cup that you hold between your knees. I was able to spin some thread with it but it felt very clumsy. Next one will be a lot heavier.

Adding the finish to this Riverfront Stadium pen blank! I built up about 20 layers of CA glue, then finished it off with steel wool and polishing paste. I love how the finish really brings out those pieces of the stadium seats inside the epoxy. What do you think?

Rough turned alder blank. This is the first time I'm trying to dry a rough bowl like this with the intention of turning it to final dimension later. This alder has been cracking, we'll see if this helps.

I'm pretty sure this is the largest thing I've ever turned by enclosed volume.
