Caladenia paludosa - Swamp Spider Orchid

Often found growing in dense coastal heathland in areas that are swampy in winter, hence its common name. Endemic to the southwest of Western Australia.

The increase in spring wildflowers has brought an increase in the number of these day flying Forester Moths (Pollanisus cupreus) that are around at the minute.

Lots of vibrant Green Scarab Beetles (Diphucephala colaspidoides) around at the moment, making the most of the abundant spring wildflowers 💚

Once, decades ago, I was delegated to supervise the disposal of a Humpback Whale carcass. Broke in half while we tried to drag it with a backhoe. Eventually we dug a huge hole in the beach, shoved it in and buried it. Idea was to dig it up years later and recover the skeleton for a museum. #WildOz

We've first found a Powl here in January but had only ever heard the female. We went back recently to check. Day 1 dusk, female calling. Day 2 scat, feather and pellets, then at dusk a low silent flight followed by a second shadow, we knew we had a pair! Today we found them. #birds #brisbane #wildoz

So far, thankfully, no reports of Australian Fur Seals catching the dreaded H5 Bird Flu. I've been checking on this haul-out site on an isolated rock at Burrawarra Point, Guerrilla Bay on the NSW South Coast. Around 20 seals there. extreme telephoto from the lookout. #BirdFlu #WildOz #Seals

A new Powerful Owl pair! We had found the female in January at a new site. We'd seen and heard her a few times since, but only her, so we'd begun to think she was on her own. But last night we saw them fly out together, and today we found them roosting next to each other.

Good news #invert story of the week 🦋

After a catastrophic decline in numbers over recent years that placed Australia’s iconic Bogong moth on the IUCN Red List, their numbers have really surged this year!

Portent of summer’s approach.

When the Black-faced cuckooshrikes return to the area, summer is anon. Medium sized greenbrier passerine with a black head as its name suggests.

A beautiful Chequered Swallowtail butterfly seen in my garden a few days ago. Fast, powerful fliers. This is the Australian subspecies. One of the world's most widespread butterflies and can turn up anywhere in Australia. Feeding on Coast Rosemary (Westringa fruticosa). #WildOz #butterflies

Scaly Sunday
This sand plain skink was spotted during fieldwork in the AW region. They eat spiders and insects, mostly termites, and hide in spinifex to avoid predators.

Large Apostlebird chicks, small nest. It might be time to fledge! The parents were still bringing food to their young ones. Eromanga, Qld
