Dust and Shadows is probably my most whimsical work so far. The closest I have to this is Curly singing a song they made up about cleaning fishes.
-Curly’s pronouns are they/them btw
#WritingCommunity

“Cleaning fishies is so fun! When I scrape, the scales run.” Curly sang, “When they’re clean, I am done. Then I eat them with a bun.” One thing Michael liked was how bright Curly was. Even with the most mundane tasks, they could enjoy themself. He smiled, and hummed along with Curly.
Soon, Michael began singing along with Curly and swayed side to side with them. It was a simple dance they made. Swaying side to side, while carefully using the knife to clean the fish

This is a particularly hard one for me, because Dylan's narration is unintentionally whimsical so much that the dialogue feels "normal" by comparison 90% of the time.

I suppose I'll go with this bit of him and Nerissa in junior high school~

She laughed and sat next to me.
‘This is the boys’ changing room,’ I said two octaves too high.
‘No shit Sherlock, but there isn’t exactly a girls’ changing room poolside, is there.’
I shook my head. She was right, after all.
‘Why’d you do it?’
‘Do what?’ I looked up for the first time since she approached me. There were nipples. Girl nipples. I shrieked again, slipped off the bench and crabwalked a 180 so as not to sully her purity with my lurid gaze.
‘Holy shit, have you never seen a naked person before?’ I heard shifting behind me, then my towel hit me in the back of the head. ‘Cover yourself if it’s that important to you. I’ll go put on a shirt so your head doesn’t explode. When I come back, answer my question, okay?’
Still unable to words, I nodded. Footsteps padded away, and I jumped up quick as lightning and threw on some shorts. She came back in literally just a shirt. I didn’t dare look any lower. Then we took our prior seats, and I stared straight ahead so hard. So hard.
‘So why’d you do it?’
‘I don’t know.’
‘You don’t know.’
I shrugged.
‘You threw away a chance to be on the swim team because you don’t know.’
‘Guess so.’
‘I didn’t need your help.’
‘I know.’
Silence. A whistle chirped outside. Guess they got on with tryouts after all.
‘Why’d you do it?’
‘You really wanna know?’
‘Yeah.’
‘Well, if I told you, I’d have to kill you.’
‘Like you were gonna kill him?’
‘I wasn’t—!’ She looked at me. Studied me. I think. I couldn’t tell very well because she was only in my peripheral vision and I refused to look in her direction. But I could feel her eyes on me. ‘I was only gonna hurt him a little. He deserved it.’
‘Even if he did, those weren’t “hurt him a little” eyes.’
She laughed. A big, throw your head back and flash all your pointy teeth laugh. ‘I see why she finds you interesting, Dylan. You’re alright.’ Standing, she offered her hand. ‘Name’s Nerissa. Nerissa Requiem.’

Best I could think of is this snip from Demon King Daughter book 1, where Kyoka is so confused she drops into a childish voice and asks a simple question '...Why is yours so heavy?'

It's rare for Kyoka (The Demon King) to be openly ignorant of anything.

Get it: pjccahill.carrd.co

"Himari, do you need a hand?" Kyoka started, already reaching to help.
Seina added, "What the heck is this?"
Himari softly waved Kyoka down, who pouted, but obeyed.
"This useless dumbbell is my blessed weapon," Himari sourly explained, finally letting the overlong bag flop onto the ground for a moment.
Kyoka looked like a confused puppy, head tilted, and Seina cringed faintly.
"What... what do you need a blessed weapon for? You have holy magic out the wazoo."
Himari straightened in an exaggerated fashion, sucking in a breath. As she started speaking, she was clearly listing off something she had drilled into her skull many, many times. "All paladins of the Demon Slayer organization wield the holy symbol of their office via their weapon forged of blessed metal. For a paladin to be unable to wield a blessed weapon is to be a cripple and a wastrel, unworthy of her station."
Seina and Kyoka identically blinked a few times. Seina raised a finger, but froze, and Kyoka finally just stared down at the long bag.
"...Why is yours so heavy?"
Kyoka's voice was small and higher pitched, sounding much younger than her usual manner. She had no idea where to start, so she defaulted to her most blunt curiosity.

Hailey, being a human girl in a realm of magic and strange creatures, is ALWAYS finding herself at odds with everything around her. This is an early snip, second time in Lin J'Roe, where Hailey meets a voice in the lavenders.

Tossing aside common sense, I opted to continue, walking slowly, cane in hand, the pearl in my cute canteen purse. My Vans, denim overalls, and slightly faded Supergirl T-shirt. Ah yes, adventuring attire. “Don’t freak out, Hailey. Save us all? Hey, hey, she said all the work’s done, right? Maybe I’ll just waltz on into wherever-this-is-J’Roe and bing, bang, boom. Flame. Stuff. Yeah.”

“To whom do you speak?” a slow, deep male voice came from somewhere.

“Who’s there? And where does this path lead, exactly?”

“Why ought it lead anywhere at all?”

My eyes widened cautiously; I tightly gripped my cane. “Who’s there?” It gave no reply, so I screeched, “Come on—wh-whatever you are! I asked you a question.”

The voice let out an elongated ‘hmmm’ and then said, “Why presume I am a who?”

I narrowed my eyes, agitated. “What the frick else could you be?”

“Merely a voice,” it proudly stated.

“No, I’m pretty sure you’ve gotta have a body.”

“Why must a voice have a body?” he collectedly hummed.

I pulled at my hair in frustration, wrestling it around my arm like a gauntlet. “Because nothing cannot make a sound! Jeez-Louise!”

A brief interlude followed, ceasing as a blustering rustle came from the lavenders. To my confusion, a voluminous snail scooted its way in front of me from the high flower wall.

Whimsical Writers (Sept 15th)!

Of course, your characters don't need to be gods discussing their favourite baked goods for your dialogue to be whimsical. It merely needs to be unexpected, yet believable for characters in that moment.

Whimsical dialogue happens if a character is believably at odds with the topic. For example, demigods who discuss a lust for soup. Share whimsical dialogue from your WIP.

Ridiculous, unless it's an absurdist comedy or something, is the point where whimsy starts detracting from the story. Where it goes from light, frolicsome to cringe/eyeroll worthy imo. It's certainly a trickly line to walk because humor and whimsy tolerance is subjective.

How can I put this simply? (I'll give it my best shot but I don't think it will be that good)

Whimsy is like Bedknobs & Broomsticks. It has charm, wonder & emotion

Ridiculous is like Pete's Dragon. Goofy, silly & ungrounded

I had a moment like this when I described Dinas Drosddeilen in Deilenddu Forest, my WIP for Raven & Bear. The city features a lot more technology than I'd previously described so I was worried about that.

A floating city is pretty whimsical.

I think this is more contextual than anything concrete. The character dynamics of a scene mean a LOT.

Scenes relying on an emotionally uneducated character making an ass of themselves just embarrass me rather than entertain me. I have to 'get through' them rather than enjoy them.

The initial dreams that TY4LM is based on (yes, TY4LM quite literally #CameToMeInADream) were definitely erring on the side of outright ridiculous. I tamed them down to more whimsical short stories, then built out the overall narrative and put them together in a singular novel~

I draw the line only to cross it and wave at you from the opposite side. Outright ridiculous is my game. Prepare to cringe or run for your life.

#WhimsicalWriters Actually, my example is an art thing.

I designed this cover for an anthology I'm in (coming Oct 1). The theme is gothic fiction. Did a vote on different styles to draw it in and we landed on papercraft! I was so worried it was too whimsical but the whole group loved it.

the cover of the Uncanny and Uncouth anthology.

It is a Victorian Gothic house with death standing in the doorway, looking out. There are purple curtains on the left with fantasy elements in the room, blue curtains on right with sci-fi elements, and red stained glass in the center with horror elements. A rocketship is crashed into the roof on the right, and a fragon breathes fire on the left.

Whimsical Writers (Sept 13th)!

We've all had a moment where we turn to our peers and question whether the whimsy went too far. What kind of moments have you had, did you ever read something that was more ridiculous than fun?

It can be hard to draw a line between the outright ridiculous and the whimsical. How would you describe the difference, is there an example of it which came to mind?

There are many writers I could mention, but I'm going to talk about an artist whose work always cheers me up when I see it. They're called @floofnsweet.io and my favourite pieces are their MTG tokens.

They inspired me to include MTG in Raven & Bear.

Catherynne M. Valente's worlds often have whimsical elements, and they're very often strange and wonderful. I return to Palimpsest in particular on occasion.

If I am very lucky, while I'm reading, the wonder in her books will spark some in me.

This is a good time to shout-out my friend Rigs! We met as RP buddies in MMOs, and Rigs has always had a great mix of drama and whimsy in her characters and plot, which was a balance I always had trouble with. Her playful, spunky characters handling hard issues really inspired me!

I am in awe of Premee Mohamed & the amazing dark whimsy in her work. From the details in "And What Can We Offer You Tonight" to the entire bizarre forest of "The Butcher of the Forest" - her work inspires me to dig deeper into my unique vision.
