This is my favourite garden centre. I think it is the Bee's knees. I know where to find the best Bumblebees. Allow me to introduce you to Knights … no swords, armour or battles, just a local, family-run business for 80 years.

A Red-tailed Bumblebee (Bombus lapidarius), a social Bee that is an important pollinator, lands on a purple Verbena at the garden centre. The insect's wings are folded neatly over its black fuzzy back with its distinctive tail already almost touching the florets of the Verbena. My camera says this lovely little ginger, black and buff chap is a Tree Bumblebee or New Garden Bumblebee (Bombus hypnorum) that has begun spreading to Great Britain and Ireland this century from mainland Europe. Here it is working on a pink Sedum next to green leaves in the garden at Knole, a medieval mansion in Sevenoaks, Kent. Camera: iPhone 15 Pro.
