A New Paradigm Emerging Stanislav Grof (1970, 1975, 1980, 1984, 1985, 1988a, 1988b; Grof and Grof 1980, 1989, 1990; Grof and Halifax 1977) is one such pioneer in this sort of “useless” research. Though he is by no means alone, I mention him in that he has achieved far more than simply demonstrating the validity of particular incorrigible facts that turn our familiar, comfy, Newtonian-Cartesian paradigm on its ear. Additionally, Grof (1985) puts forth a model, a framework for a new paradigm. Bringing together the physicist Bohm’s (1980) model of the universe and the neurosurgeon Pribram’s (1971, 1976) model of the brain, he presents a holonomic “perspective” or “theory” based upon the idea of a hologram. The important aspect of this perspective is that it allows the inclusion and understanding of these new existential facts, yet does not contradict the Newtonian-Cartesian view of the world. In Part One of this book, “Being Shiva — Destroying and Creating Worlds,” I advance an argument based on taking a look at some assumptions we clearly do make and upon which we build all of our knowledge, our science, and our beliefs about what is real. It comes down to anthropocentrism, which is a species-centrism more disastrous for our understandings of trueness than any of the other centrisms — ethnocentrism, egocentrism, or any other. In doing that I unveil the layers of reality construction upon which we construct that anthropocentrism. This is an epistemological undertaking, for in doing this the intent is, by pulling away the false pillars upon which we build our world, to find out what can be known instead: What might actually be true. What might give us surer footing from which to view our worlds. In Part Two, “Transcending Worlds,” I begin to advance the notions that we might genuinely consider, once the false ones have been swept away. I point out that everything that we experience in life, beginning even before conception, before the coming together of sperm and ovum that created us, are learning experiences and are formative. They create imprints that skew all experiences coming afterward; they set templates within which everything that comes after is configured. They determine what we will see, how we will see it; how we will interpret it; what our reaction will be to it; and what we will do about it. We are human and have an experiential awareness extending back into a time prior to appearing on Earth. Then, in coming into Form, what we perceive and how we act are determined not so much by genetics but by prior experience. Hence, these peri-conceptional experiences, these absolute earliest experiences of ours in the Form State, are the first of the Veils across our windows to the world, creating the screen upon which we will view our drama of human life. So it is that our biological and anatomical makeup along with our individual histories prenatally and perinatally, beginning as early as when we were sperm and ova cells inside our parents, determine our human reality. They create the parameters of our experience in Form. They put down the ground rules of the board game of the human life we will experience and in which we will participate. Leslie Feher Psychoanalysis, Birth, Cutting of Umbilical Cord, Separation Trauma Leslie Feher (1980) sought to extend the Freudian tradition farther back into areas that, she asserts, were until only recently unknowable. Thus, she describes a natal theory and therapy that includes experiences of cutting the umbilical cord, birth, and even prebirth. In fact, she considers the cutting of the umbilical cord to be central in her theory of trauma, calling it the “crisis umbilicus,” and echoes Fodor in claiming that it is the true origin of the castration fears made so much of in psychoanalysis. This is so because, according to Feher, the cord and placenta is an object of security and is considered by the fetus to be part of him- or herself. Thus, this cutting represents a supreme threat in being a separation from a total life support system, a major organ, a part of oneself. In these ways, she also brings forward for renewed appreciation Rank’s speculations on the element of separation trauma as a crucial element of the birth trauma.

All of this despite the fact that within the “real rules” of the Newtonian-Cartesian paradigm they have absolutely no possibility of existing or being able to happen.... Yet they do. Similarly, within the “real world” of “brute facts” related to biological survivability they seemingly find no place.... Yet we stumble over them. If all of this were not enough, we find that these incorrigible facts provide more than a pathway to a glimpse outside our biological blinders, more than a puncture in our epistemological seal, and more than a transcendence of our biological paradigm. We find that this information from “outside” the table of our biological board game is less biologically useless than was thought from within the borders of that board game. We find, indeed, that our species’s assessment through natural selection of that which exists beyond it was less than perfect. We find that we are on the verge of re-evaluating that assessment and — to the extent it is possible and driven (once again) by biological survivability — of expanding our biological-cultural constructions to admit and give meaning to some of them.

Yet how cowardly, on the other hand, was it to conform to the draft and do what one was told in helping to precipitate the war and contribute to the slaughter of millions and the ecocide of huge swaths of land? When the engines of society are rolling over human lives, is it more cowardly to refuse to be a part of it, often suffering severe consequences of jail time, approbation, and worse? Is it more cowardly to lay one’s body on the gears of the infernal machine, as Mario Savio saw it?2 Or is it actually more cowardly to refuse to stand up for life, become an obedient soldier, and go along with the patriarchy, receiving all kinds of applause and reward for obeying it in the process and for the rest of one’s life? At any rate, Tom Robbins, in his novel, opens the door to a new way of understanding heroism and cowardice — one which, as well, is most relevant to our current multicultural times. He shows that a true heroic approach is one that dares to do what no one has ever done: change the prevailing pattern, buck tradition, create a new cultural form — one more in line with reason, life, peace, love, and freedom from unnecessary suffering and brutality. In that, he may have been inspired by the Yippies and Abbie Hoffman during the Vietnam War. Robbins shows the “left hand” of the Tao of Funny God, if you will. That is, that it is certainly transcendent and powerful to confront evil and to not be caught up in it and to exemplify a loving, creative, and peaceful response. Following the reasoning I have been presenting, one can speculate that the prospects for bridging the boundaries between species (of both the known and “unknown” variety) as well as between our physical reality and other possible “non-physical” ones are good if we can find a way to look at that physical/biological (Newtonian- Cartesian) level from a deeper grounding in spiritual (or transpersonal) reality. In fact, the evidence from LSD research, some spiritual literature, and various aspects of “new age” phenomena that are washing up on the shore of a variety of disciplines is exactly to that effect. Indeed, wonder of wonders, finally in our evolution — in this very time of ours — there may be more people who are focusing on those keys to possible biological transcendence than ever before. Additionally, these researchers and seekers are scientifically, empirically, and experientially researching, eliciting, and perceiving many such incorrigible and “useless” phenomena and events. This accessibility of cultural ideas, other than those that one was born into, has profound implications for a postmodern multicultural world — one whose mixing of cultural ideas is increased exponentially through the catalyst of the internet. I believe those implications are hopeful and wonderful and that they set the stage for a better way and an alternative path for a humanity currently heading for an abyss. We find it nearly impossible to see the world as alive, as our ancestors did, regardless what our sciences now tell us. The reality outside of that, which we think of as matter and as unconscious and unalive, is merely the aspect of our own reality from which we are temporarily cut off. It is our own consciousness; however it is the part of which we are unconscious. Or as I often point out, it is the part we have forgotten1 — perhaps even intentionally, as a choice made by our inherent Divinity. TRANSCENDING WORLDS Page 29 The New Evidence and the New Researchers For unless we do this, unless we keep in mind the limitations of our reality constructions — including our “scientific” ones — we have absolutely no way of understanding certain incorrigible and “biologically useless” facts that intrude upon our “real world” and that are scared into the light of our biological parameters by our scientific rummaging through the bushes. These “useless” side effects of our scientific enterprise may indeed contain the keys to our venturing forth, to at least some small degree, beyond the biological real-world confines of our predecessors. For just as we have seen that standing on a deeper, more encompassing paradigm than the cultural makes transcultural discourse and understanding possible, so also standing on one deeper than the biological may bring trans-biological understanding closer. Risking It All in Running Away The novel, Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins, contains an excellent exploration and understanding of this new approach — the necessity, first and foremost, that one not be part of the evil, in a situation where wrongness blankets everything. The story depicts the hero, Alobar, refusing to go along with the cultural mandates of his society, seen clearly as ridiculous and harmful, especially to him. This is wrongness, all pervasive, for the cultural mindset contains not a shred of an alternative. He, indeed, is a king who, according to tradition, is supposed to kill himself at a certain time. No king has ever before refused this regicide. No one in that culture has ever really considered one could. This situation is not unlike many cultures today and is certainly the mindset of those living in the societies of earlier times. Anthropologists readily observe that the lesser the contact any society and culture has with other ones, the lesser those people living within it know of alternatives to the tenets of their own culture. And the lesser people know of alternatives to anything, including the cultural views of one’s society, the less they are able to conceive options in the decisions of one’s life. A DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS Page xxi Book One, The Secret Life of Stones In Book One, my premise is that there is a secret life in the Universe and that the physical world is an illusion arising from our human perception. I propose that the fundamental reality is consciousness; more correctly, it is experiential. That matter, the physical world, is a projection of human perception thrown upon the formless is the conclusion of quantum physics and our latest consciousness research. Hence all that exists, really, is Experience. Matter is metaphor of that Experience. It is also message of that particular aspect of Experience that we leave out of our awareness in coming into Form, in becoming human. The Material Veil What we put into unconsciousness in the process of coming into Form becomes the physical world we experience as unalive and not conscious, though actually it is pregnant with experiential Divinity — Subjectivity, Feeling, Awareness, Bliss ... and Love. Correspondingly, the essence of the Universe is found in our direct experience of it, which is our essential Divinity.

Birth Relivings, Importance of Birth — Negative Imprints but Positive Effects, Too Another psychoanalyst, and pediatrician as well, Winnicott (1958) also held that birth is remembered and is important. He insisted that the birth trauma is real, but he disagreed with Rank and Fodor that it is always traumatic. He suggested that a normal, nontraumatic, birth has many positive benefits, particularly for ego development. Still, he contended that traumatic birth is permanently etched in memory and leaves a lifetime psychological scar. Winnicott (1958) also suggested the possibility of prenatal trauma. He has been called the first primal therapist in that he described the first birth primals — actual observable relivings of birth — spontaneously occurring by some of his patients during their sessions with him. Thus he was beginning the trend beyond mere talking association or dream analysis as ways of accessing and integrating this material.
