Apparently, in the original script for #TheMatrix, humans were collectively used for their brain's processing power, adding to the neural network that runs the Matrix. They changed it to batteries, because back in 1999, people wouldn't understand what a datacenters or brain organoids are.

Lilly Wachowski says she’s “done” with ‘THE MATRIX’, but Drew Goddard reportedly won’t proceed with ‘MATRIX 5’ without the Wachowskis’ blessing.

She says she and Lana may still “stick our noses in a tiny bit” before deciding.
