@alexwilcock.bsky.socialOTD 1999: Massive nuclear dumps erupt on the Moon
The Moon is blasted out of orbit – taking Moonbase Alpha and all its crew far from Earth.
They will never get to experience the triumphs of Twenty-first Century human history.
The lucky, lucky sods.

@lordwoolamaloo.bsky.socialIt's September 13th - never forget the brave souls of Moonbase Alpha!
@contentapologist.bsky.social27 years since them slags blew the Moon out of Earth orbit. Still freaks my nut out to this day.
@eurospacehistory.bsky.socialThe show was in production between 1973 and 1975, precisely the period that ESA was being created as a merger of two European space organisations, ELDO and ESRO. @esa.int's convention was signed in May 1975, and #Space1999 first aired the UK in September 1975.

@eurospacehistory.bsky.socialIndeed! Apart from the show's premise (a research base in space, built through international cooperation and run by a multinational crew, like the International Space Station), @esa.int has a few more things in common with #Space1999...
@dobbersw.bsky.socialNever Forget.

@inquietoalex.bsky.social13 settembre 1999: la Luna usciva dall'orbita terrestre. 300 donne e uomini dispersi nello spazio infinito.
Oggi ricordiamo il loro sacrificio. ♥️

@wavenode.bsky.socialIt's 27 years to the day since a massive nuclear explosion tore the moon out of Earth's orbit, so I'm obviously going to the pictures to watch "Breakaway" and "The Metamorph". I missed the former on Granada's original TX, and I don't know whether I've ever seen the latter at all. #space1999

@peterwmurphy1.bsky.social13Sept1999 is Breakaway Day. In tv series #Space1999 an explosion in a nuclear waste dump rips the Moon out of Earth orbit and off into space. I have fond memories of Commander Koenig (Martin Landau), Dr Helena Russell (Barbara Bain) and Eagle pilot Alan Carter (Australian actor Nick Tate) 📺 #scifi
