The closest is with the oft-mentioned Banyan maosa to the southeast. Nikho is from there, as is Colmo. Born out of trade in clothe and foodstuffs from the Redwoods with Banyan domestic animals, it was sealed during the war when the two communities banded together. 🧵1/3

Good morning, #Septopolis.

We go to the wider, surrounding world now as we approach the end! These relationships might have been lightly established with imports and exports, but what about bigger in scale?

Twinning arrangements or even warring cities/nations can work here. 👀

A daily prompt card for #Septopolis 2026, hosted by @khonri.com.

Government & Civics, 28. What are relationships like with neighboring settlements? Are they friendly, hostile, or something in between like sports rivalries? Are there any "sister cities?"

Interpret each prompt as suits your needs! Talk about relevant characters! Yap! Or don't! Develop a new city or whatever or talk about one you already built. Make friends.

The background features a slightly blurred and purple hued image of the upper section of a set photograph of Main Commercial Street in Fritz Lang's Metropolis (UFA, 1927) of towering buildings.

Order is upheld by the aptly named Orderkeepers of the Guild of Peace!
They wear red uniforms, and some call them bloodjackets, but that's just derogatory!

#Septopolis 2026! 9/27 Depending on species and location, criminal jurisdiction may follow different rules or be given broad-to-total independence—insect and bird orders tend to handle their own business. Human-and-kin law is usually covered by a religious judge, formally or otherwise.

#Septopolis 27:

One of Central Planning's requirements to affiliated communities is the institution of a 'modern' police force. West Harewood started its own just 5 years ago; and many residents still resent the imposition, though Special Constable Martin Martens does his best to build goodwill.

Moodboard for Constable Martens, a handsome, personable pine marten who loves blueberry muffins and could easily bite your throat out if you ignore his polite warnings.

A26. Ancus is a pretty small region of Sesina (it used to be a Hepici-based rebel military outpost). Long story short, they have a town council headed by a mayor and each council member is pretty much a dept head. Small town antics, mostly. Everybody knows each other.

#Septopolis 25: Consequently, even Imperial Legionaries who’ve lived in Chernoz for decades tend to opt for on-base housing.

@catherinewinters.comSep 27, 2026, 11:00 PM

#Septopolis 25: Someone from Balyr Province or the Satrapy of Nivor is certainly permitted to move to Chernoz, but even their grandchildren might never be regarded as locals.

@catherinewinters.comSep 27, 2026, 11:00 PM

#Septopolis 25: This may be in large part due to the thousands of soldiers and recruits stationed at the Imperial Military Academy above the town.

@catherinewinters.comSep 27, 2026, 11:00 PM

#Septopolis 25: The townspeople of Chernoz might speak Aza and celebrate the same holidays as the rest of the Empire, but there’s no question outsiders are viewed with suspicion.

A25. You can also get citizenship faster thru "exceptional works" ie. you've invested a lot into Sesina arts and culture via STEM, property ownership, etc; Aka the one who has the gold and prestige makes the rules.
All folks are considered full adult citizens in Sesina by 19.

A25. The Inheritance System in Sesina (which is essentially a more extreme version of primogeniture), a lot of the money given to Hepici immigrants would be passed thru their sons. This can cause a lot of discord, esp to families wishing to "assimilate". (3/?)

A25. In the case for Ancus, many Hepici rebel veterans were granted what essentially was an indentured laborer contract -- being granted dual citizenship for themeselves and their children/wards with a generous stipend/pension after a decade of working there. Extra points for sons (2/?)

A standing army of 100 knights is garrisoned at Safe Harbor to defend the city and surrounding lands, mostly from monsters and enemy forces. They will intervene if they see or are called to imminent threats to people or property.

But most try to self-police as locally as possible.

A25. While //technically//, Sesina practices a form of birthright citizenship (ie. someone born there is considered a citizen) -- in truth, many 1st-gen + 2nd-gen immigrants face the issue of not being considered full-citizens until being grandfathered in, so to speak. (1/?)

I touched on this yesterday with the structure of governance, and while many human facing agencies have a relatively normal human manning the helm, when it comes to the police, it's faceless and inhuman brutality all the way down.

Usually this is pretty easy. Niona sets the laws and, as a god, is capable of enforcing compliance.

Those who worship the gods all belong to them, at least a little bit. It isn't hard to force them to obey.

And few would be foolish enough to defy her, trapped in her city.🧵

Will try to be brief

They have a complex system. There's no cops, or L. E. that patrols. They have investigators, but they only look into things reported by someone. If they see something, they have to report it like everyone else and they can't work on their own case.

The sole law and enforcement of such, as well as defense of the tiny city state of Belaqua, comes from the mystery patron in the pleasure palace, and their functionaries down from there.

This will never ever go wrong, I'm sure.

The shire reeve is the main enforcer of laws, but there is also a local militia that is supposed to help with that.
