When the defending Champion Blazers selected Rich Laurel in the 1977 NBA Draft, he was expected to be a scoring guard like he was at Hofstra. In his senior season, Laurel led the NCAA with a 30.3 scoring average while shooting .535 from the field. Sadly, the 6’-6” shooting guard and his agent demanded a no-contract and the Blazers refused to agree to that. Before the regular season commenced, Laurel was traded to Atlanta, who released him six weeks later. Laurel signed with Milwaukee, playing 10 games, before he headed to Europe. Laurel played in Italy, France and Belgium over the next eight years.
The second player selected by the Blazers in the first round of the 1984 NBA Draft, Bernard Thompson was one of five rookies to make the Blazers roster for the 1984/85 season. Thompson played 59 games his rookie year, averaging 3.3 points in 9 minutes of action. The 6’-6” guard was traded to Phoenix after his year in Portland before playing a year with the Rockets. Thompson played 204 games in five seasons in the NBA but would continue playing in the CBA and various leagues around the globe before retiring after 24 years, in 2008.
After a single season at Michigan State, Zach Randolph declared for the 2001 NBA Draft. The 6’-9” forward learned the league as a back up to Rasheed Wallace for two years before moving into the starting lineup in 2003. Starting 80 games that year, Randolph averaged jumped to 20.1 points, 10.5 rebounds and won the the NBA Most Improved Player Award. Randolph was traded after the 2006/07 season the the Knicks, before another trade to the Clippers the following year. In 2009, Randolph found a home in Memphis, playing eight years with the Grizzlies and earned two All-Star nominations. In 17 years in the NBA, Randolph played 1116 games and scored 18,578 points.
