Happy book birthday to Lottie Saahko, whose children's novel Lumi & the Wolf is published today!

Lumi takes a white wolf on a journey across Lapland to save his life, learning to trust her autistic strengths to guide them both. Looks brilliant!

If we were to write a biography of #MGauthor Cara Bartek (@CaraBartek), we'd probably title it "How Crying Children Boost Creativity." ow.ly/YfU530meHOv #authorQA #serafinalovesscience #stemeducation #girlsinstem #girlsinscience #girlsinsciencerock #middlegrade #MGlit

Every Wednesday (that I remember!), I will post a children’s book I’ve enjoyed.

If you’ve read it too, or you want to share another book, join in!

Gloam, by Jack Mackay, cover & illus by Ben Joel Price.

Alt text for why I like it.

#ukkidlit #kidlituk #middlegrade #spookyreads

A photograph showing my hand holding a copy of Gloam, by Jack Mackay, cover and illustrations by Ben Joel Price. The cover illustration shows a girl standing beneath a weeping willow; inside the willow’s branches are the title and a picture of a house in a rural landscape, a cat, a talisman stone with an eye painted on it, and a bony white hand.
Why I like it: I can’t read adult horror because I am too weedy, but middlegrade horror like this provides the ideal ladleful of scariness without grossness, menace rather than gory violence. Gloam certainly delivers in terms of creepy and there are times when I was reading frantically while also terrified of what was about to happen. The dynamics between the siblings is well observed, but what makes this book particularly special is the way that it has used horror to explore grief and fear in a way that feels very true and moving.
Ben Joel Price’s illustrations are so absolutely perfect: they both capture the creepiness of the story and bring their own uncanny and even horrifying atmosphere to it. An excellent pairing!

#funny #webcomics #middlegrade

A comic book spread from Striped Bandits featuring raccoons enjoying marshmallow-like clouds:

Top Half: One raccoon tastes yellow treats, saying, "THIS ONE TASTE LIKE LEMONS." In the background, another raccoon says, "LIKE, THIS ONE'S STRAWBERRY." To the right, a third raccoon eats an orange cloud off a stick, exclaiming, "YUMMY ORANGE SWIRL."

Bottom Half: Six narrow horizontal panels show close-ups of happy raccoons enjoying their food, with yellow narrative boxes across the panels reading, "THIS...", "DAY...", "COULDN'T...", "GET...", "ANY...", "BETTER..."

Bottom Overlay: Large, bold pink text spanning the bottom of the page reads "HEY GUYZ!"A comic panel featuring a swirling, psychedelic background in shades of purple, green, yellow, and orange. At the center is a bright yellow oval speech bubble with bold pink stylized text that reads "POOF".

Setting for RUNAWAY HOME: Setting a book in Charleston, West Virginia in 1994 means getting the small things right. The Kanawha River. Downtown. Railroad tracks. The bridges. So many bridges.
I grew up there. Some of this book is just me, remembering. #kidlit #amwriting #middlegrade #craft #setting
