・遅れました → I was late
・遅れたんです → (because something happened) I was late

「ちょっと」 is the MVP word 🏆 Literally 'a little' — but Japanese people use it to say no: それはちょっと… ('that's a little…') = nope. Reading between the lines is half the language.
~ている = ongoing action, resulting state, or habit.
読んでいます / 閉まっています. Casual: 見てる.

Harsh truth: way more people get stuck at N4 than ever pass N1. The difference usually isn't talent — it's whether you have a system for consistent review.
Everyone says 'just immerse yourself', but dropping a beginner into raw anime = pure frustration. Immersion clicks once you have ~N4 vocab. Before that, build the base. Order matters.
The politest way to ask for something: 「〜ていただけますか」
・確認していただけますか → could you check this for me?
One level above 〜てください. In a Japanese office you'll use it daily 🙏
Restaurant in 4 phrases 🍜
・二人です → table for two
・おすすめは何ですか → what do you recommend
・これください → this one (+ point at menu)
・お会計お願いします → check please
Pointing + これ works 100% of the time.
Izakaya insider phrases 🍺
・とりあえず生で → a draft beer to start
・取り皿ください → small plate please
・別々でお願いします → split the bill
That last one saves a LOT of awkwardness 😂
やばい is the word learners misjudge most. It means 'oh no' AND 'amazing'.
・やばい、遅刻する → crap, I'm late
・この店やばい → this place is incredible
Tone carries the entire meaning. Very Japanese 😂
「ありがとうございます」 vs 「ありがとうございました」 — the past form (〜ました) is for thanks about something already finished (like when leaving a shop). Small detail, very Japanese 😌
微妙 (bimyou) is not 'subtle' — in practice it's a polite 'meh, not great'.
・味は微妙だった → the taste was… let's say questionable
Japanese rarely negates directly, so this word does the heavy lifting 😅
