Climbing a narrow ravine with walls that slope upward at about a 45-degree angle to our right and left. A forest of mature hardwoods towers above us. The midday sun is shining through the canopy, silhouetting the tree trunks and limbs while backlighting the foliage, highlighting the vibrant autumn yellows and golds. There are glimpses of a deep blue October sky. The floor of the ravine is a jumble of gray rocks and boulders, fallen branches and freshly fallen leaves. A sprinkling of ferns and small leafy shoots linger into the late growing season.
