1/3 #fossilFriday Mary Anning gets a shoutout in 1837, in Peter Parley’s Wonders of the Earth, Sea, and Sky, an early British children's book about prehistoric beasts:

A tropical scene with palm trees and a pool. Two plesiosaurs with beaks swim in the pool. An ichthyosaur crawls on the ground. A tiny plump pterosaur with a short wingspan dives nearby. Caption: "Extinct Animals"

Welcome back to another #fossilfriday

I take a break from the Invertebrates to show you this! This is a tooth from a theropod dinosaur likely belonging to an unidentified Abelisaurid. This was found in the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian) Dekkar Formation in Morocco.

Giving a talk at North Carolina State on this #FossilFriday and getting to show this very fun figure of growth in the horseshoe crab Euproops from Haug & Haug 2020. The species gives a rare view of the development of an extinct arthropod and allows direct comparison with modern species.

A diagram showing several horseshoe crab fossils arranged in groups according to their molt stage with a swirling background connecting them. The end of the diagram showing the last two molt stages in detail.

I swear I was gonna do a tyrannosaur #FossilFriday even before Tromerosaurus dropped! šŸ˜…

Each time I'm at the Mongolian Institute of Paleontology, even I have to admire and drool over the 'baby' Tarbosaurus MPC-D 107/7. Check out the 'chicken wing'-sized articulated arm from this specimen!!!!🤩

It’s #SpookySeason so it’s time we talked about FOSSIL BRAINS šŸ§ šŸ’€

Yep, casts of a skull’s interior can be fossilized—these are called #BrainEndocasts!

šŸ”— Head to bit.ly/camel-brain & tune in next week for another #FossilFriday from the Paleo Research InstitutešŸ‘‰

Happy #FossilFriday! Using high-res CT, researchers reveal the skull anatomy of Brazilian Pleistocene amphisbaenians, showing braincase structures and new characters for studying their evolution. Even they can’t worm (lizard) their way out of research! Study by Paiva et al.: doi.org/10.1002/ar.7...

I’ve been enjoying getting back to prep as a volunteer at the University of Wisconsin Geology Museum. Here’s the phytosaur sacral vertebra I’ve been working on #FossilFriday

Large fossil vertebra, reddish brown in color, propped up on bean bags. An air scribe sits next to it.

ā€¼ļøHere's a nice trackway possibly made by a scorpion on the mudflats of Alabama ~315 million years ago (Pennsylvanian)šŸ¦‚. This one comes from the famous Union Chapel Mine, and was cited in Buta & Kopaska-Merkel (2016).
