Photo of a very old, tattered pamphlet, "Swamp Root Almanac." The illustration on the cover shows a pretty Native American woman wrapped in a blanket.

I do have a soft spot for 'industrial art'; publicity for things not exactly in the retail sphere & so this rather fun 1949 Railway Executive - British Railways leaflet on the transport of perishables by express trains is right up my street! #railways #ephemera

British Railways : the transport of Perishables by Express Train Services : publicity leaflet : The Railway Executive : 1949 : cover. A detailed publicity leaflet issued by the Railway Executive, part of the newly formed British Transport Commission, in July 1949 and who used the 'trading name' of British Railways. It lists and illustrates the various types of containers available for the transportation of perishable goods and foodstuffs.

This was, in effect, an early version of modern container transportation in that it allowed a demountable body that could be moved by both road vehicles (for 'first' or 'last' mile transport) and rail wagons. The containers included insulated, refrigerated and ventilated types along with older styles of specialised vans for meat and fish. The railways had, in earlier days, helped create national markets for many such foods by way of speedy movement of such perishable goods. The cover shows a large colour illustration of two rail wagons, one with a container fitted, and the other having a "Highly Insulated Container" being lifted by crane and transferred to a waiting flat bed British Railways road vehicle. The text is repeated on the lower panel to allow for the leaflet to be folded.
