𝜆 weakened substantially since 2014 when global warming started to accelerate and SST patterns along with marine heatwaves speed up the reduction of low clouds along with circulation changes (aerosol reductions only likely a minor contribution to cloud cover reductions but strong effects on cloud brightness).

In brief, pattern effects arise because identical amounts of surface warming/cooling in different regions have different impacts on clouds and the global energy budget. Warming in convective regions warms the free troposphere, which increases reflective low-cloud cover in remote regions, producing negative (i.e., more-stabilizing) feedbacks.

On the other hand, warming in subsidence regions weakens local temperature inversions and reduces low-cloud cover feedbacks. Compared to the Tropics, temperature changes at higher latitudes tend to produce less-negative feedbacks due to cloud, lapse-rate, and ice-albedo feedbacks.

Historical warming patterns and feedbacks differ from the expected long-term response to CO 2 due to differences between the fast and slow responses to CO 2 forcing, the distinct responses to various historical forcings, and natural variability. The warming pattern over c. 1980–2014 has been particularly surprising compared to expectations from CO 2 forcing: the tropical Pacific warmed in the west and cooled over much of the east (Fig. 1), and Antarctic sea ice expanded over the Southern Ocean while SST cooled, although the SST cooling has uncertain magnitude.

The projected long-term response to CO 2 forcing is opposite to the 1980–2014 pattern (and also differs from the 1901– 2022 patterns in Fig. 1): coupled atmosphere–ocean general circulation models (AOGCMs) show amplified long- term warming in the eastern Pacific and Southern Ocean. If the warming pattern eventually resembles model projections under sustained CO 2 forcing, feedbacks are expected to become less negative, leading to higher ECS estimates compared to those that implicitly assume a constant warming pattern.
