Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'drip' #BookQW #BookSky
If Dan Mackmain'd had the slightest idea of the challenge he'd face on this holiday, he'd have broken out in a cold sweat.
Don't miss this month's Kindle 99p ebook offer, price-matched from other retailers. www.amazon.co.uk/Green-Mans-H...

Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. The creature has pale skin covered in sparse black hair and it looks a bit like an ape, a bit like a bear, and completely unlike either of those.

Book extract reads: As I ate, I studied the map, careful not to drip tomato sauce onto the paper. Cheddar looked to be the closest place sizeable enough to have a decent range of shops. Hopefully the town would be busy enough that no one would look twice at me buying nappies and other baby stuff. Even though the story about a newborn going missing for a couple of hours had made the TV news, strangers outside Bishop’s Warren shouldn’t have any reason to think I’d had anything to do with it.
But that was definitely a bus ride away. If I got out on the village green here, with a carrier bag loaded with baby stuff, anyone who lived in Bishop’s Warren would look at me and wonder. They’d have heard about a baby going missing. The people who lived on Pigeon Lane most likely knew Fin and I had arrived without a child. They had to know baby Alice had been left outside this cottage.

DRIP is today's #BookQW and this one comes from CARVED FROM STONE AND DREAM, where Rafael's nightmare becomes reality:

Choose Bookshop dot org as your vendor so you can give to your favorite indie bookstore: awfulagent.com/ebooks/carve...

A picture of a circle of sigils encircling a skull and the title CARVED FROM STONE AND DREAM T.FROHOCK in white print on a dark green background with the text: Midair over the cavity was a single mirror, which whirled lazily. The colors of the prisoners’ song rose up and disappeared into the glass, only to return as darkness, deeper than any darkness in the mortal realm. Ichor from the mirror dripped over the boulder and sizzled across the nefilim’s upturned faces.

Rafael cringed from the smell of scorched flesh. A low moan burned at the back of his throat as he remembered his nightmare and the spinning mirror over Miquel’s head. No. Not my Miquel.

Going to magic school is a big change. Mina wasn't quite ready for just how different it would be!

From Lost Talent, available now on Kindle.

She dipped the feather in the pot for longer but then it ended up dripping ink all over the page before she could write anything. Perhaps she needed to use the knife to cut it in some way?
“Alchemy is the process of using sympathetic reagents to brew consumable liquids with magical properties.”
As she was left-handed, she found she had to hold her arm far above her parchment to make sure that she didn't smudge what she had written with the flappy sleeves of her school robe. A Trope Map for Lost Talent, Shows the book cover with the two main characters on a purple background with golden stars around the edges. The tropes are:

Asexual Protagonist

Neurodivergent Protagonist

Kai and the band have reached Berlin. And as singer Dom says: “There’s still a dark side to Berlin, as with all the great, old cities. It changes people.”
Especially when the people have been in each other's company for a bit too long...

Inside, the water had pooled underneath the leak, soaking Neale’s sleeping bag. But some had trickled around the edge of the tent, and nobody’s kit had wholly escaped.
“Get in, you stupid bugger, and close the f---ing door.”
Stupid bugger was me, standing dumbly outside in my wet jeans with mud all over my arse. Four whiskies inside me, I had no idea how I was going to get to my own sleeping bag without dripping all over everyone else on the way. Neale bundled up his own useless sleeping bag and pushed past me, radiating anger fit to fry an egg.

Today's word is DRIP. Today's #BookQW from DIRECT DESCENDANT (DAW Books, Inc. 2025), a standalone contemporary fantasy (or cozy horror, depending on if you're talking to me or marketing) takeing place in Northern Ontario, land of the silver birch, home of the...not quite moose. Shop indie if you can

Lower left the cover of Direct Descendant, yellow and green and black with a bakery, a woman eating a cup cake, framing silver birch, and tentacles. Because that's the way we roll.

By the time I got back to the guest house, sweat dripped continuously off my chin and rolled in slow motion into my cleavage like a titillating shot in one of those terrible 90's fantasies resurrected by streaming services. Inside the blessed air conditioning, I slowly climbed the three stairs from the side door to the first floor, damp denim dragging against my shins. I didn't know shins could sweat. First time for everything.

Hospital patient and bedside visitor holding hands, with out of focus nurse in the background. "His mother coughed, choked, tried to sit up. 'My throat,' she whispered. The nurse gave her a sip of water, and then she looked at Finn and said, 'You promised.' He didn’t know what she meant, what he had promised. A relaxed, congratulatory mood filled the room now. The nurse loosened the restraints and Finn sat in a chair and held his mother’s hand. 'My leg hurts,' she complained. 'What are you doing to me?' The nurse reached to adjust the IV #drip.

Meet George. I write short stories to find out the personality of a character in a book I’m writing. This story is formatted in a similar manner to the chapters in Her Borrowed Grave.
vanessajknipe.wixsite.com/vanessa-knip...

An issue of the fictional York Tribune newspaper. The main picture shows a man playing with his dog. Articles inclued Dog, a man's best friend, George Maskel's reporter's byline and bio, and Five found dead on Walmgate Stray.
Text reads: The Giant’s stone stood on its own in a clearing. It marked the pride of the St-Devan-Maskells. How many other old families could claim that any of their ancestors had slain a monster? Even though it was supposed to be the giant lying in its death throws, the rock still stood twice the height of a grown man. Last summer, when he had been smaller, Arthur had paced out the length. It took 47 of his strides to reach from the feet to the head of the giant. Tired now and trailing the spear, Arthur walked towards the head of the giant.
That was where he was supposed to be.
Papa stood waiting with his brother, Uncle George, at the Tears of the Giant: a rill that dripped from the top of the Stone.
“What’s Arthur doing here? It should be Oliver,” Papa demanded.

Front cover and excerpt from The Many Shades of Midnight for Book Quote Wednesday 9 September - 'drip'

Rumour was a deadly thing, and Alyas had proved himself extremely adept at seeding it. So adept, in fact, that the tiny snippets of gossip had done what she had not thought possible and shaken, ever so slightly, the regard of the rich for the hand that fed them. He was the reason she was cooped up here instead of out there, enjoying all the rewards she had earned. Because every time she stepped outside her door, those bloody kids with their placards were there to shout their complaints and their devastating truths, turning the people against her drip by drip.
   Gods, she hated him.
So when he turned up on her doorstep one evening, she could not say she was overjoyed to see him.

Promo image showing cover of Nectar for the God, by Patrick Samphire, with accompanying text: The whispering disappeared the moment we entered the temple. My sudden clarity of thought made me stumble forward. All I could hear was our breathing coming back to us, layered in echoes that were far louder than they should have been, and the distant drip of water. The place smelled of the decaying detritus washed up by the waves.

Book Quote Wednesday & the word is DRIP. Which, in Cursed Under London, gives me the chance to introduce you to Fang's horrible magic power. He has Reverse Glamour. He can make anything (but himself) look disgusting. Including the walls. #BookSky #BookQW Buying links farragobooks.com/book-series/...

Quote from Cursed Under London. Quote reads: Randall turned, his stake raised, away from Lazare and towards the stranger. ‘I enjoyed crushing you foreign muck into the filth last time. Cheers for coming back for an encore.’
The stranger tilted his head a little at Randall. ‘Filth, is it?’
Something off to Lazare’s side caught his eye. The wall of the narrow alley was wet with sewage, as if gong buckets were tipping out from every window above, all at the same time. He glanced at the other wall – it was doing the same. The filth was coming down thick and fast, a great unending torrent of it, slick, and dripping lumps. Lazare tried to pull his bags closer to himself and folded his wings even tighter than usual over his shoulders, to avoid touching the disgusting walls. The muggers noticed it too.
‘What the…’
‘Sloppy buckets time, Randall,’ noted Herbert.
‘But that’s at dawn,’ Randall muttered. ‘What’s going on?’ He turned to the stranger again. ‘Be this magic?’
‘No, this be poo-poo,’ Herbert explained. ‘Happens all the time.’
‘Herbert, look up. There’s no windows!’
Lazare looked up, along with Herbert. There were indeed no windows along either of the narrow alley walls. Filth was just streaming down it from nowhere.

It's Book Quote Wednesday, and this week's word is "drip." So here's a snippet from Melting the Ice Queen, the epic conclusion to the Queens of Villainy trilogy, which you can preorder now!

stephanieburgis.com/books/melting-the-ice-queen

#bookqw #romancelandia

The illustrated front cover of Stephanie Burgis's Melting the Ice Queen (Book 3 in The Queens of Villainy) shows two women facing each other, holding twin candles, in the midst of a cathedral made of ice. The woman on the left is slim, Black, and wears an icy crown above her cool blue wedding gown, with more shards of ice held ready in the air behind her as she regards her new bride with open suspicion; the woman on the right is white, red-haired, lushly curved, and wearing a gold wedding gown as she grins mischievously at her new wife, with rainbow-colored heat rays beaming out from behind her own figure. The tagline reads: Nothing melts the heart like an old flame.
Above and around that cover image is this snippet of text: Stepping forward, she raised her candle. Clothilde did the same. As the sweet voices of the choir soared high above them, their two wicks touched and both candles merged for a long, hushed moment to form a joint column of flame that shot high above them. Wax dripped from the joined candles to the floor, officially sealing their union . . .
And Ailana stopped waiting for directions.
Before the priest could say another word, she stalked forward, shifted both candles firmly out of her way, and swept up her new wife’s lush, voluptuous figure with her free arm.
Clothilde’s eyes gleamed hazel, not gold, as they opened wide. Clothilde’s soft, full lips parted in what looked like wonder . . .
And then Ailana was kissing her with fierce possession, heedless of the burning divine heat that pressed between them and in defiance of all oncoming danger.

I don't often provide quotes from THE RILL LORD, but this one provides a good example of "dripping." Things in that book get a little bloody.
#bookqw #WritingCommunity

Left side of image is the book cover of THE RILL LORD, sixth and final book of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Cover is gray and stormy with a red-robed sorcerer facing off against a distant power.

Right side is a text excerpt from THE RILL LORD. Excerpt shows a lone soldier appealing for help to a woman at a farm:

“And they cannot stay here. Or don’t you see this man is armed? A soldier.” The mistress’s weasel-sharp eyes had discerned the sword Robdan wore strapped to his back, though he had wrapped it so that the jewels in the hilt would not catch light and so betray them.
“Lady, I will bring you no harm. I promise it.” Robdan addressed the woman in his best Stauba. It was imperative to demonstrate he was not rabble, that he was educated, a civil man. “I am asking only for my friend. Can’t you even let me warm him in your house? Or help me send word?”
“You will not demean my house with that filthy beggar, dripping blood all over our floors! Let the wolves have him—and you too!” The woman turned to Mellona, making her order clear. “See them gone or I’ll set the dogs on them.”
