Another flash of lightning zipped by, cutting Othelia’s thought short. Without hesitation she closed her eyes, clenched her fist and tensed. This defense did nothing to protect her from the drum of another roll of thunder. Tokonus could not allow himself to pout while she sat there with
him clearly uncomfortable.

“Othelia, I don’t mean to meddle... but are... are you afraid of the thunder?”

For a time, Othelia did not answer him, instead turning her body away as if in shame. Tokonus did not pry further. If she was not interested in speaking on this, then it was not for him to mind.

“Is it that obvious," Othelia inquired, finally allowing herself to relax.

“Whether it is or isn’t doesn’t really matter. Fear is not something to be ashamed of. Any person who claims to be fearless is a liar or a fool and I am not sure which is worse.”

“Funny..." Othelia said with a soft chuckle. “I... I only came here because I thought you wouldn’t care. I am afraid of thunder, but I don’t trust the others here to know it. Everyone around us... they're always looking for a weakness – a way in. I guess I thought that, of anyone, you would ignore me at best, and I wouldn’t have to be alone.”

Alright children. Do you know the first thing you will need to secure when you find yourself in a survival situation? Food? Nah, not that. Water? Important to be sure, but that ain’t it either. If you guessed shelter, then you can pat yourself on the back and lock in because for a town full of buildings, finding a comfortable spot was a bitch!

But Duggy, I can hear you start, why not try to reinforce your apartment? Well, if you must know, that place was a deathtrap. With a fence and the familiarity of my living space, I didn’t quite feel comfortable abandoning the place initially. After two attacks right outside my door, I realized that it wasn’t the best place to be. There wasn’t any practical way to defend it, and there wasn’t another means of escape if I got cornered. That was ignoring the lack of storage, space, or entertainment – listen if I was going to be alone, I needed something to keep my sanity intact.

So off to the dusty roads I went, making sure to keep my weight on the balls of my feet and my head on a swivel while I searched. Many places were skipped without a second glance, and there were a ton more that I didn’t even pretend to take a peek at.

Houses, other apartments, grocery stores, and restaurants were all off the table. They would be the first place people decided to huddle up, and that meant they would be hotspots for the stalker patrols. Next off the list was the mall, pawn shops, and shopping centers – especially, especially the mall – because they would be looter heaven. Staggering into one of those was like putting a giant beacon up that said; ‘Yo, free eats my G’. Not a genius, but I wouldn’t be falling
for that shit anytime soon.

Finally, I skulked my way to the one place I had always called home. There, standing in all
its radiant majesty, was the Penstemon Heights Public Library. Being one of the only places in
Tierra Fertil that was partially built into the ground, it was a very unassuming place. It was a
cozy sized sanctuary, and – with my completely ignorant estimate – could have probably fit about fifty or more people comfortably. It would have entertainment, books I could skim for survival and DIY tips, and I knew it had access to water. In other words, it was perfect.

Creeping down the steps, I struggled not to get nostalgic. Of all the libraries in the city, this was young Duggy’s neighborhood bookshelf. It was the nicest part of an otherwise unremarkable area to me, and all it took was one bike ride to find my way into the cool embrace of a book. Of course there were computers as well. Renting one with a library card gave me a few hours of internet access that I didn’t have to share. Time I spent watching fan animated music videos, playing around with social media websites, and finding ways to sneak past content filters the systems had been programmed with to keep browsing PG-13.

Standing in front of the doors now... I wasn’t sure how to feel. I mean, yeah, there was excitement and the aforementioned nostalgia... but then there was a subtle anxiety too. A brotha couldn’t help but worry; what if my perfect little shelter wasn’t so welcoming? It wasn’t my personal library, so it wasn’t as if I would be the only one that knew it existed. Other asylum seekers could have claimed the place – and if not them. some of the mindless might have been inside. Did I want to see the place defiled? Fuck...

Beating back the uncertainty, I stepped into the entrance. The place was dark – or rather, the only light filling the room was from the ribbons of the sun pouring in through the small windows from the outside.
