Thirdly, with the additional load of birth trauma, and trauma from fetal malnutrition, which we will get to next, you can imagine how much more unhappy we are than our cousins. We come into the world weeping and wailing, screaming and turning red and flailing about. Our cousins do not. Hence during that extra time of dependence and even for a while afterward, there are additional emotional needs that human mothers have to take care of that their sister mothers do not have to do. Babies are often in pain; mothers must coo, pacify, hum, rock, and make nice. You can see where this is a considerable prod for even more mother-infant interaction and communication — both verbally, audibly, in the direction of increasing facility in language, and visually, by means of facial cues and body language. Culture The point is that this intensive mother-infant interaction is the foundation for the extra sociability required of humans and for culture, with all its components of language, need for communication, and structure in our social groups.

In addition, the tasks of mothering, for that devil-may-care chimp mother includes nothing like what is required of human mothers in terms of pacifying the infant. Being more mature and less helpless, chimp and gorilla babies do not need to, nor have they evolved to be able to, scream and wail for attention and to express their needs like human newborns do. That is another thing that is distinctly different between us and our relatives in Nature: Human babies require more pacifying, thus more attention in that regard. Granted, human babies are in more pain because their needs are greater, being more helpless; and those needs cannot be perfectly satisfied, so they cry about that. e) Culture — which is the accumulated, infinitely varied, and unavoidably flawed understandings of how to behave and survive in the world, developed over time, and different in every society — steps in where mind sharing ... what we disrespectfully call instinct ... should be.
