Hardiman's maps of c. 1601 reveals the dense medieval core. North Main Street and South Main Street formed Cork's urban spine, with a web of lanes branching from them. The 1602 map shows Cork beginning to push beyond its medieval limits into the hinterland

The cartographic story begins with the 1545 Tower Map. Cork appears as a small walled settlement occupying islands surrounded by marshes and tidal channels. Water wasn't simply a backdrop, it shaped the city's entire form.
