Friends & I are having a heated discussion regarding the claim that AI will "kill all humans"
We have 1 friend in tech who is downplaying it (trust me im closer to this) & shared this piece as a more eloquently write up of his perspective

I like my reply

Piece:
bcantrill.dtrace.org/2026/09/13/t...

I appreciated the piece, and the fear contagion point is real. But I think there's a fairly large hole in his argument worth exploring

Cantrill spends the whole post discrediting Coxon for lacking domain credentials; not an expert in this domain, so don't trust him. Then he asks us to trust his own credentials instead, "from my narrow domain of expertise: building computers." That's the exact same move, just pointed in the other direction. He's not rejecting "pick a domain and demand trust," he's doing it too.

And I don't think "trust the experts" even applies cleanly here in the first place. It works fine for questions with a checkable answer, does this bridge hold weight, does this piece of code do what intended… It falls apart for genuine forecasts about something that's never happened before, especially when real domain experts disagree with each other. If the experts don't even agree, "trust the experts" doesn't tell you anything, it just tells you to pick a side and pretend it's neutral.

At the same time, this isn’t how society work. One cannot pick and chose their domain to say “trust me/them… I/they know more than you.”

I cannot begin to tell you how many times people have come to complan about “new math” without any true understanding of what it is (anything but new), why approaches are being put front and center, or even engaging in a personal reflection (“i hate math… maybe because I was taught in a way that didn’t resonate with me”). I can explain the research all day, but I've learned that leading with "trust me, I know the pedagogy" almost never lands and honestly isn’t the move, because what's actually underneath their frustration is something real and specific to them. Their lived experience is not something I can out-argue with data, and dismissing it as "just trust the expert" would be missing the point entirely. The two claims, is the method sound, and did this person have a bad experience, aren't actually in conflict, but collapsing them in…
